JUPITER, Fla. — Before Malaysian Airlines flight 370, and far less seriously than that, there was another mysterious disappearance that captivated millions of people and sparked constant conspiracy theories on Twitter.Shelby Miller went 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA and 169 strikeouts in 173.1 innings for the St. Louis Cardinals last season, good enough to finish third in the National League Rookie of the Year balloting. In the playoffs, though, Miller suddenly vanished. Six days before his 23rd birthday, the right-hander pitched an inning of mop-up relief in Game 2 of the division series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was never seen again. Two seasons ago, the Baltimore Orioles won 93 games and made the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. It was a magical season for Baltimore fans. For Brian Cashman, though, it was "more of an anomaly." Here's the full quote from the New York Yankees general manager, as reported in the New York Post: "When you over-perform, like the Orioles did (in 2012), you realize that’s more of an anomaly. And last year was a market correction.”Cashman was referring to a familiar discussion from the summer and fall of 2012, when the Birds won 11 more games than they would be expected to based on their run differential (712-705). They did it in part by going a jaw-dropping 29-9 in one-run games. 夜网论坛 In 2013, the Orioles finished with a better run differential (745-709) and finished with exactly the number of wins they would be expected to, 85.In fairness to Cashman, he wasn't taking an unprovoked shot at a division rival (and 2012 playoff opponent). His comments came in the context of talking about his own team's offseason moves after winning 85 games last year. Based on their run differential, the Yankees were a 79-win team.“Our team over-performed last year,” he said. “It’s a credit to everybody involved in that process. But the record didn’t reflect the talent. And so when you take a sledgehammer to the roster like we did this winter and spend the money we did, it’s more reflective of recognizing. Of not being fooled.”Still, many Oriole fans may not be too happy to hear the GM[......]

Three games into the 2014 season, the Oakland A's already find themselves with a brewing closer controversy.Jim Johnson, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles during the offseason, allowed a two-run single to the Cleveland Indians' Michael Brantley in the ninth inning Wednesday for his second blown save and second loss in three days. The A's are 1-2. "We should be 3-0 and I take responsibility," Johnson said. "But if I sulk or pout it's not going to do anyone any good. I have to be better."Johnson, 30, has allowed five hits and five runs in just one total inning pitched in his two outings, leaving his ERA at an astronomical 45.00. Johnson's struggles may look familiar to Orioles fans. He saved 50 games in 2013 to tie for the the major league lead. But also led the the majors in blown saves with nine. He had a disastrous stretch in May when he blew four of five opport夜网论坛unities and another in August when he blew three straight. In 2012, he saved 51 games and made the All-Star team. He had just three blown saves the whole season.Oakland manager Bob Melvin isn't worried about Johnson at this point."It's only been two games," he said. "He has a terrific track record. He's just off to a slow start."[......]

Where was Sammy Sosa? The former All-Star outfielder put up some of the most eye-popping years in Wrigley Field history when he played for the Cubs from 1992 to 2004. Sosa was the 1998 National League MVP when he hit 66 homers. Incredibly, that was just one of three years in which he hit more than 60 dingers. So why wasn't Sosa at today's celebration of Wrigley Field's 100th anniversary along with other former Cubs stars like Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Andre Dawson?  FYI, told K. Wood couldnt make it today...Sammy Sosa simply not invited— Jesse Rogers (@ESPNChiCubs) April 23, 2014Well, it's pretty clear what's going on here: Sosa's reputation has been greatly tarnished by allegations that he took PEDs during his career. In 2009, for instance, the New York Times reported Sosa was on a list of players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. The PED stain has kept him out of the Hall of Fame despite more than 600 home runs, and apparently it kept the Cubs from recognizing the part he played in their history. Many commentators were not happy with the snub:Erased from history!
